The Munenori Kawasaki Book of Baseball Clichés

Do you want to see everything that's great about baseball embodied in a single player?
Turn on a Toronto Blue Jays game and watch Japanese shortstop Munenori Kawasaki.
Kawasaki was called up from Triple-A Buffalo in April after All-Star Jose Reyes severely sprained his left ankle. On Sunday, he hit a game-winning 2-run double in the 9th inning, lifting the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. In the post-game interview, Kawasaki pulled-out his Japanese-to-English book of baseball clichés...

The Legend of El Oso Blanco

Are you kids familiar with Evan Gattis of the Atlanta Braves?
The 26-year-old rookie has had a rough journey to the big leagues.
Back in 2004, Gattis graduated from Dallas' Bishop Lynch High School and signed a letter of intent to play at Texas A&M. As we all know, more often than not, life doesn't go according to plans.
Evan Gattis didn't make it to college. He ended up in drug rehab and went through a long period of counselling for depression.

He made a decision to walk away from baseball.
He worked as a cook, valet, housekeeper and a ski-lift operator.
After 4 years away from the game, Gattis returned to Texas to play at the University of Texas-Permian Basin. He caught Atlanta's attention and the Braves selected him in the 23rd round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.
His journey took him to Class A Rome, Class A Advanced Lynchburg and Double-A Mississippi. Playing in the Venezuelan Winter League, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound catcher became a fan favorite and gained the nickname 'El Oso Blanco,' which translates to "The White Bear."
Gattis was summoned to The Show to fill in for catcher Brian McCann who missed the Braves’ first 30 games due to shoulder surgery.
'El Oso Blanco' has 10 home runs in his first 37 major league games! He’s homered 3 times in the last 4 games - twice as a pinch-hitter. On Wednesday, against the Twins, he cranked a grand slam!!

JOE 'F#$KIN' MAUER

Well it almost happened...

Anibal Sanchez was two outs away from a no-hitter on Friday night. Joe Mauer hit a single to break up the no-no. It was the 4th one-hitter of Sanchez's career. He threw a no-hitter in his rookie season back in 2006.

SCHERZER...TROUT...MARIAH BEVACQUA

Max Scherzer dominated, again, on Tuesday night.
Scherzer pitched 8 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and fired 7 Ks.
Miguel Cabrera hit his 12th dinger - his 4th in the last 2 games.
It was Miggy's 195th homer with the Tigers - moving him into a tie with Kirk Gibson for 10th place on the franchise list. Detroit beat the Tribe 5-1.

As Miguel Cabrera goes on a tear - his American League nemesis, Mike Trout, did a little raking of his own.
If you'll recall, Trout was last season's AL rookie of the year and MVP runner-up to Miggy. Last night Trout became the youngest American League player EVER to hit for the cycle and the youngest since Mel Ott in 1929.

This is Mariah Bevacqua. Her biography states that she is a California girl - Livin' life in a bikini.

HAPPY VICTORIA DAY!...MIGGY'S BIG NIGHT...SUGGERS & JONES

HAPPY VICTORIA DAY!

The Texas Rangers just took 3 out of 4 from the Detroit Tigers.
Texas beat Detroit 11-8 on Sunday Night Baseball despite the one-man-show put on by Miggy.
Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 with 3 home runs, 5 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
He's the 23rd player in MLB history to do so, but he's the FIRST to do it in a losing cause!

JV LOSING HIS GRIP...EMMA GLOVER

Tonight, the Detroit Tigers are going to attempt to salvage a tie in their 4-game series against the Texas Rangers.
Here's what has transpired thus far: Thursday: Rangers won 10 - 4, Friday: Tigers won 2 - 1, Saturday: Rangers won 7 - 2. As you can see - Texas continues their mastery over Detroit.
Thursday's domination set the precedent. The game was supposed to be a battle between two of baseball's best hurlers Justin Verlander vs Yu Darvish.
It was no battle.
Verlander lasted 2 2/3 innings, walked 2, struck out 3, gave up 6 hits and allowed 8 runs.
Darvish went 8 innings, walked 1, struck out 6, gave up 7 hits and 4 runs.

More importantly, Yu Darvish completely ignores pitch counts. the cat threw 130 pitches against Detroit!
Darvish is 7-1. He has started 9 games this season. In 8 of those starts he has thrown 100 pitches or more.
One of my favourite baseball scribes, Cliff Corcoran, makes the case that, because of Verlander's drop in velocity and control, the Dodgers Clayton Kershaw is already surpassing him as the best pitcher in baseball.
I like Verlander. But I think Max Scherzer has been the BEST pitcher on the Tigers both last season and, so far, this season.
Justin Verlander (2012): 17 - 8, 239 Ks, ERA 2.64, WHIP 1.06
Max Scherzer (2012): 16 - 7, 231 Ks, ERA 3.74, WHIP 1.27
Justin Verlander (2013): 4 - 4, 60 Ks, ERA 3.17, WHIP 1.30
Max Scherzer (2013): 5 -0, 68 Ks, ERA 3.98, WHIP 0.99

NO 'MO' ZONE...LITTLE PRINCE & ZUBAZPALOOZA...INSTAGRAM HOTNESS

Remember, last May, when Mariano Rivera was innocently shagging fly balls and he tore the crap out of his right ACL - requiring surgery?

Well, earlier today, the Yankees and Rivera returned to the scene of the crime - Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. The future HOF Yankees closer has since healed and resumed his routine of shagging fly balls. Today, when Mo walked to the outfield he was greeted by a chalk outline of the spot where he blew-out his knee. Along with the body outline was a sign designating the area as a "No 'Mo' Zone."

It was Prince Fielder's birthday on May 9th and a few sites posted this sweet-ass photo of little Prince rocking a pair of Chicago Cubs zubaz pants. Ahh...the 1990's...what a decade...

Don't you just wish you could jump in a time machine and go back?
Unfortunately, the human race hasn't perfected time travel yet - however - you can do the next best thing. On Thursday, June 20th at 7:08 PM the Detroit Tigers are hosting Zubazpalooza III.
Fans can purchase a special ticket package that includes tickets to see the Tigers take on the Red Sox, a pre-game party at the Hockeytown Café, a sweet pair of Zubaz pants and a Zubaz headband!!!

I'M LOVIN' ME SOME 'HACKSAW'

OMG! It's Friday and I have exciting news!!
On Wednesday, the Red Sox CRUSHED the Blue Jays 10 - 1. Mike Napoli helped the cause by hitting two moonshots - measured at 467 feet and 472 - according to ESPN Home Run Tracker. Dustin Pedroia then took to Twitter to ask people for an appropriate nickname for Napoli...
Pedroia's Request
He got his answer. Red Sox fan William St. Jean proposed that Napoli's new moniker should be 'Hacksaw' - a nod to former pro wrestler 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan. For those not old enough to remember, 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan used to carry around an American flag and a 2 x 4. He would eventually defeat his opponent while brandishing the hunk of lumber and celebrate with his signature battle cry of "Hooooooo!"

I am lovin' this because 'Hacksaw' Mike Napoli is a Hot Baseball Wife Hall of Fame kinda guy...

BLACK CRACKERS...MIGGY SALSA...CHEWBACCA UNI...ALANA BLANCHARD

Hi Kids!
I am sad to report that, for the first time in a dozen years, I missed the Annual Negro Leagues Tribute Game hosted by the Detroit Tigers. I was in Ottawa. The Tigers swept the Atlanta Braves over the weekend. On Saturday Detroit wore the throwback threads of the Detroit Stars and the Braves suited-up as the Atlanta Black Crackers. Pretty sweet...

Ajax looks like he belongs in that uniform.

Miguel Cabrera introduced his own line of Miggy's Salsa at a Meijer store in Livonia...

The Tiger's Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens, are hosting a Star Wars themed weekend and will be rockin' Chewbacca-styled uniforms for “May the Fourth Be With You” on May 4 and “Revenge of the Fifth” the next day...

Today's Hot Baseball Wife Hall of Fame chick-of-the-day is sweet surfin' hottie Alana Blanchard.
For those not familiar with Alana, she's one of the top female pro surfers on the planet and a bikini model extraordinaire.
